In mid-November, Southern California Association members and their guests enjoyed tours of the The Broad, the latest addition to Los Angeles’s exciting cultural scene. The response was overwhelming with over 160 reservations received for the program, resulting in double duty for the museum’s docents. They discussed the building’s unique “veil-and vault” architectural design and focused on the highlights of the collection.
Philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad founded the museum in September 2015 to house 2,000 works of art, said to be “among the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art worldwide” (www.thebroad.org). The collection includes works by major artists of the 1950’s such as Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cy Twombly. A prominent part of the collection is represented by works of Pop artists of the 1960’s, including Roy Lichtenstein, Ed Ruscha, and Andy Warhol. Also well represented are such artists of the 1980’s: Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, Barbara Kruger, and Jeff Koons.
Members responded with rave reviews of the experience. Many were particularly appreciative of the opportunity to interact with fellow Phi Betes and form new friendships.
