He has served as a NASA consultant since retiring as former Chief Engineer for Flight Dynamics at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena. Byrnes received his BA and MA degrees in Physics and Astronomy and completed course work for the Ph.D. degree in Astronomy specializing in Celestial Mechanics, then joined TRW Systems Group in Houston, to work on lunar trajectory design for the Apollo Program. He joined JPL in 1977 for work on Halley’s Comet proposals and what became the Galileo mission to Jupiter. In 1996 he was awarded the NASA Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal for his work on Galileo trajectory design and navigation.
